Aamir Khan Didn’t Take Payment for Laal Singh Chaddha

Aamir Khan has revealed that he didn’t take any remuneration for Laal Singh Chaddha as he blamed the film’s failure for the same. He felt that it was his own lack of integrity and work that really hurt him to be paid at all, being the star and producer of his own movie especially through creating his own rules about how any of his movies get paid for.
He spoke to ABP News in reference to the fate of Laal Singh Chaddha, one of the most watched movies in Bollywood of 2022. The movie really bombed, despite its cast, international appeal and emotional story. Laal Singh Chaddha was really close to Aamir’s heart because he not only acted in it but also co produced it.
🔹 Aamir Khan Didn’t Take Payment for Laal Singh Chaddha
In his own words, Aamir Khan explained,
“I get my payment from the profit. If the film doesn’t make a profit, I don’t receive my payment. For example, Laal Singh Chaddha. I haven’t. I don’t regret it. Bilkul sahi niyam hai ye. Agar meri film nakamyab hui hai toh mujhe hi zimmedari leni chaiye. Ye meri soch hai, (No, I don’t regret. This is a very correct rule. If my film fails, I should take responsibility. This is my thinking).”
This goes on to show Aamir’s ethics before Bollywood. Unlike most A list actors, who ask for exorbitant fees before the start of any movie, Khan does not hesitate to take responsibility for it.
🔹 Laal Singh Chaddha: A Dream Project That Didn’t Connect
Laal Singh Chaddha is an official adaptation of the Hollywood classic Forrest Gump and was meant to be a passion project for Aamir Khan. Starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Naga Chaitanya and Mona Singh, the film literally takes on a global theme and the emotional storytelling within that framework yet it fails to impress the Indian audience, ending in total commercial loss.
While many counted the timing of the release, weak promotional strategies and social media backlash, Aamir opted not to shift the blame. Instead, he stood by the project and accepted full accountability for its outcome.
🔹 “Not Everyone Works Like Me” – Aamir on Actor Payments
Although Aamir’s no payment stance has become a major talking point, he clarified that this shouldn’t be seen as a rule for the entire industry.
“Every person works in their own way. Some actors charge based on the number of days they work and that’s a professional approach. I just follow a different principle. When I do a film, I don’t work thinking that I’m giving 60 days so I should get paid a certain amount. That’s not my way of thinking.”
This clarifies that while Aamir Khan’s profit based payment model is idealistic and noble, he respects others in the industry who follow fixed fee structures.
🔹 Aamir Khan’s Risk taking in Bollywood
Ever since entering Bollywood, he has adopted a risk taking course from the very beginning such as casting Lagaan and Taare Zameen Par and later with movies like Dangal and other strong social messages. He has apparently stepped out of the format of the Bollywood commercial.
By rejecting money from Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir is proving himself as an artist who is not just a film star but quite responsible and values the audience’s response to his work over mere financial gain.
🔹 Effect on Bollywood Business Model
The admission made by Aamir Khan has sparked a new debate on remuneration and accountability in Bollywood actors. Since production costs are skyrocketing and actors’ fees are eye watering, the profit sharing model adopted by Aamir may also be the way to go for future film productions especially in a post pandemic marketplace when audience turnout becomes unpredictable.
🔹 Conclusion: Aamir Khan Exemplifies Integrity in Indian Cinema
Laal Singh Chaddha may not have turned out commercially successful however, Aamir Khan’s stand has certainly gained him much admiration. His refusal to take payment from a failed film has set a new standard of accountability and professionalism in Bollywood.
Audiences changing and becoming more discerning make responsible behavior in these great actors a game that, when played right, can go a long way toward rebuilding trust in Indian cinema. Aamir Khan proves once again that he is not just a superstar but a caring, principled artist committed to his craft in making movies.
